http://www.runnerstribe.com/article/post/show/id/764-Solinsky-A-Column-By-Len-Johnson makes the poiunt that this is another example that Mottram and Birmingham have also shown, that we can compete with the Africans, if we put the work in. There is no major genetic barrier. Its more about training environment than anything else. Interestingly Rupp was the one who was supposed to break the record, and he did too, but not by as much as Solinsky. Cool link!
I reckon its the compression socks that won it. hahaha Classic example of sit and kick aka as seagulling strategy there from Solinsky. Solinsky sits in 7th-4th for most of the way with Rupp in top 3 for 95% of the race. Rupp does the frontrunning for most of the last 5km, and then Rupp moves up as the bunch trims from 6 to 4. Solinsky doesnt even get to 2nd spot until the last 2-3 minutes. With 900m to go he kicks like there is no tomorrow, hits the front for the first time probably giving Rupp a massive shock and winds up the kick, going through the last 400m in about 55 secs. two african born runners find a much smaller kick to get 2nd and 3rd, and Rupp limps in for a 27.10, which is 3 seconds under the old American record, but 11 seconds shy of Solinsky. Interestingly a lot of runners to lap in the last 1-2km, and the top 4 ended up having to run wide a lot, so if those guys had moved over it could have been even faster. Noticed also that its a night run, a bit like the Tuesday and Thursday night Masters runs we have her in Perth, perfect weather for fast running.
http://www.sportsscientists.com/2010/05/sub-27-10km-limit-exclusive-club.html says that Solinsky is the heaviest sub 27min 10000m runner at 73kg by 9kg!!! So that is some outlier!
He is also the tallest at 1.85m too by a fair bit as well, so that has something to do with it. Apparently there are now 31 sub 27min men and Solinsky is the first non-african. However there is 72 sub 13min 5000m runners including another tall non-african in Mottram. Collis Birmingham who is even taller at 1.88m and weighs 71kg according to http://www.athletics.com.au/fanzone/athleteprofiles/collis_birmingham is another Australian who is pretty close to both clubs, with a 13.14 5000m PB, and holds the Australian 10,000m record of 27.29...
awesome video, thanks Epi for mentioning scienceofsport I have a link to them on my blog. so there is some things to think about and see what happens in the next few years...
looking through the comments on the scienceofsport blog, one person (shaun) makes the assertion that the BMI (body mass index if I remember rightly)values for Solinsky and Bekele are very similiar ast about 21.3. Mottram and Birmingham have slightly better BMI's at 20.1 Im on the edge of overweight with a BMI of 25.8 http://www.nhlbisupport.com/bmi/bmi-m.htm based on my current values of 174cm and 78kg. Ive lost 4kg since early 2009 though, and 2kg since January 2010, although fluctuations of 1-3kg during one week can be expected. So I'd need to get my weight down to 64kg to have a smiliar BMI to Solinsky and Bekele.
So when you take into account weight AND height, they are both on the border of healthy weight/under weight, its just that because Solinsky is so much taller he can carry more weight and still get a similiar power to weight ratio...so thats one piece of analysis that scienceofsport maybe should have mentioned and failed to...but then again I don't know how reliable BMI values are...Ive got a feeling they may be a bit unreliable...e.g. http://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/health/public/heart/obesity/lose_wt/risk.htm#limitations suggests that BMI overestimates fat in athletes due to higher muscle mass... more to think about anyhow...
Hopefully Birmingham or Mottram or some other Australian can join the sub 27 club too in the next few years...its a bit like the old days of the sub 4 minute mile...

scienceofsport had some interesting analysis of this self confessed 'fat' runner
